Oncotones at ASCO Annual Meeting: Great Band, Good Cause

The annual meeting of the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) draws oncology professionals from around the globe.  The 2010, Advancing Quality, Promoting Innovation generated significant news across the spectrum of cancer care, from prevention through end-of-life care.  Sessions focused on advances in preventing or treating the most commonly diagnosed cancers, as well as the most rare.

Prevent Cancer Foundation participates in the meeting on many levels.  President and Founder Carolyn Aldige, Jessica Abeita, Assistant Director, Research Administration & Community Outreach, and I were all there, walking the very LONG halls of the convention center, participating in sessions, networking with other organizations, and talking to the oncology community about the work of the Prevent Cancer Foundations and the contributions we make to the collective effort to better prevent and treat cancer.

And while the days were long and the subject serious, we were treated to a lighter side of the conference.  On Sunday evening, we were honored to be one of four beneficiaries of a concert featuring the Oncotones at the House of Blues in Chicago.  The Oncotones are a band that consists of corporate employees, healthcare professionals and professional musicians, performs at various events to raise money for organizations that provide services for patients and families affected by serious illness. It’s a great group of people from different walks of life, coming together for a good cause…and having a heckuva good time doing it!

The event raised almost $2000 for each of four organizations, money that will be dedicated to improving services available in prevention, care and survivorship through the Breakaway from Cancer initiative.  Thanks to the Oncotones for a great show, and to all of those that came out to the House of Blues to support us!
