The Prevent Cancer Foundation is proud to award four $10,000 grants to Custer Health in North Dakota, the Lake Cumberland District Health Department in Kentucky, Nueva Vida in Baltimore and the Skin Cancer Foundation in New York.
The awards were given as part of the Foundation’s Community Grants program. The mission of the Community Grants program is to support community programs across the United States that:
- Focus on helping people prevent cancer or find it earlier when it is more treatable.
- Demonstrate the potential to make a positive impact in the field of cancer prevention.
Community grants help fund important cancer screening and prevention programs.
This year, the external review panel had their work cut out for them as the Foundation received 107 applications from organizations in 31 states across the country! Potential projects outlined innovative and unique ways to reach their communities.
2013 Community Grant snapshots
- Standing Rock Reservation Men’s and Women’s Cancer Education and Screening – Custer Health seeks to address low screening rates amongst American Indians in North Dakota by working with the community to conduct worksite lunch-and-learn sessions that provide cancer education, with open discussion to identify barriers to screening. These sessions will include opportunities to schedule appointments for cancer screening at local clinics.
- Spread the Word – Cervical Cancer/HPV Prevention – This project aims to increase the HPV vaccination initiation and completion rate among middle and high school students in south central Kentucky. Lake Cumberland District Health Department will do this via school-based health clinics that raise awareness of HPV and its link to cervical cancer and provide vaccination.
- Access to Care for Underserved Latinas at Risk and with Cancer – The goal of this program is to provide effective and culturally relevant education on prevention and screening for breast and cervical cancer and to improve health outcomes of medically underserved Latinas by providing timely access to quality cancer screening through patient navigation services in the Baltimore metro area.
- Sun Smart U – Skin cancer is a lifestyle disease that can be prevented by first being well informed. To increase knowledge about skin cancer prevention and early detection, the Skin Cancer Foundation created a youth education program for middle and high school students. Through this grant, the Foundation will be able to promote the program to educators nationwide.
