The Prevent Cancer Foundation is thrilled to be returning to Nationals Park for our annual 5k Walk/Run on September 21. Nearly 2,000 people will come together to raise funds for and learn about cancer prevention and early detection. They will also get a taste of all the Capitol Riverfront area has to offer, as they move along the scenic route on the riverfront boardwalk through Yards Park, and back to Nationals Park, where they can enjoy a health fair around the concourse of the stadium.

If you haven’t been to the Navy Yard area in southeast D.C. lately, you may be surprised to see what you see when you step off the metro and walk a few blocks. Home of the Washington Nationals baseball team at Nationals Park, the Capitol Riverfront is also a burgeoning area with young professionals, longtime D.C. residents and young families alike.

yogaThere are a number of events happening at Yards Park each week, including free fitness classes from VIDA Fitness (Yes, I said free!). VIDA Fitness is one of the premier fitness groups in D.C. and you can join a Zumba, yoga or boot camp class with one of their amazing instructors almost any day of the week. This is a great way to get ready for the Prevent Cancer 5k Walk/Run.

Not only can you get free fitness classes, but you can also experience Rockin’ on the Riverfront, the free outdoor concert series, on Friday nights. I recently went with a few friends and had a blast listening to local Reggae band, Sam O. There are no restrictions on bringing outside food and beverages into the park, so you will find almost everyone with a picnic blanket and full spread of food to share with friends and family. You can also do what my friends and I did, and grab some yummy chicken and sides (keeping it healthy!) from Nando’s Peri Peri, which is just across the street from the park. These outdoor concerts are a great way to wind down from the week.

IMG_9029I hope you will join Prevent Cancer on September 21, but don’t wait that long to check out the Capitol Riverfront area. From taking a stroll on the riverfront boardwalk along the Anacostia River, to dining al fresco at one of the many new and delicious restaurants, to cooling off in the splash pool and waterfall, there are many activities to choose from in this thriving community and newly developed space.

Register for the 5k Walk/Run and health fair today. Start a team, recruit your friends and family and set a fundraising goal to reach together. I guarantee you will have a great time!
