Laurie Fenton Ambrose, President and CEO of the Lung Cancer Alliance, honored for her work in Lung Cancer Screening
Alexandria, VA – The Prevent Cancer Foundation is honoring Laurie Fenton Ambrose, President and CEO of the Lung Cancer Alliance, with the James L. Mulshine, M.D. Leadership Award. The award will be presented on June 13, 2016 at the 13th annual Quantitative Imaging Workshop: Lung Cancer, COPD and Heart Disease – Exploring the Intersections.
For more than a decade, Fenton Ambrose has been an outspoken voice for lung cancer patients and research and has made significant contributions to this field. She played a major role in passing the Recalcitrant Cancers Act, implementing standardized protocols for lung cancer screening with the development of the Framework for Lung Cancer Screening Excellence and advocating for the National Cancer Institute’s Lung SPORE program.
Significantly, during her tenure at the Lung Cancer Alliance, Fenton Ambrose partnered with the Prevent Cancer Foundation and the former American Legacy Foundation (now Truth Initiative) to sponsor an economic analysis on the cost effectiveness of lung cancer screening. This analysis was a critical contribution to the success of ensuring reimbursement for lung cancer screening by Medicare and Medicaid.
“Lung cancer is a particularly stigmatized disease with low survival rates. It is critical that we have advocates and partners like Ms. Fenton Ambrose who will step up and speak out on behalf of everyone at risk for or fighting lung cancer,” said Carolyn Aldigé, President and Founder of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. “We are grateful for Ms. Fenton Ambrose’s influential work and look forward to continuing to work with her on this important issue.”
The Honorable Chuck Hagel, former U.S. Senator from Nebraska and former Secretary of Defense, and Dr. Cheryl Healton, Dean of the NYU College of Global Public Health, will present the award. Dr. Healton was also the founding CEO of the former American Legacy Foundation.
