Here’s to your health! Tips for a healthy 2017

Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to live healthier this year? The Prevent Cancer Foundation® is here to help you make 2017 your healthiest year yet with these tips.

Eat a healthy breakfast every day.

Start your day on the right foot with a healthy breakfast to boost your metabolism and fight cravings throughout the day. Try making a big batch of oatmeal on Sunday night to enjoy throughout the week. Beat an egg into it while cooking to up the protein. Top with fruit, nuts or nut butters, spices and honey to make it a little more flavorful! If you prefer something savory, a hard-boiled egg and avocado on whole wheat toast also makes a great breakfast.

Walk or exercise for at least 30 minutes, 5 days (or more!) a week.

The cold winter months can make staying active more challenging, but there are exercises you can do indoors even if you don’t have a gym membership. Walk laps around your office during your break or lace up your sneakers and head to the mall on weekend mornings. If you enjoy the cold temperatures, check out these tips to protect your body from the elements.

If you smoke, quit.

It takes most smokers several tries to stop smoking for good, so don’t be discouraged if you have attempted unsuccessfully in the past. Talk to a health care professional to find the best smoking cessation options for you. Even if you have been a smoker for many years, quitting can add years back to your life and reduce your risk for lung cancer and other serious health conditions.

Learn your family’s medical history.

Knowing your family’s medical history can help you and your doctor determine when you should get screened for certain cancers or other diseases. Screening tests can help detect cancer early, when it’s easiest to treat, or detect pre-cancerous conditions before cancer even develops. If you have a family history of a disease, you may need to begin screening earlier than what guidelines suggest. This year, schedule a time to talk to your family and complete this medical history chart.

Schedule your yearly exams and cancer screenings.

We all have busy schedules and often it can be hard to find a “convenient” time for medical appointments. This year, make it a priority to schedule your yearly exam and cancer screenings. Learn more at
