Go green this St. Patrick’s Day

Published on March 15, 2019

St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect time to get decked out in green—whether you’re born Irish or just want to join in on the fun! However, the day is often associated with some unhealthy habits that can derail your health goals and increase your cancer risk, like drinking heavily or eating foods high in fat and calories.

But never fear! We’re sharing some “green” ways to lighten up your festivities so you can stay on track while still having fun.

  • Trade in your green beer for some green juice. Who doesn’t want to show their spirit by sipping some green goodness? But instead of going heavy on the beer (since alcohol in excess can increase your cancer risk), try a green juice or smoothie. Healthy drinks are packed with nutrients and delicious, too! Sláinte!
  • Add cabbage to your corned beef instead of potatoes. Corned beef and cabbage is a staple for many people celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Instead of loading your dish up with potatoes, try to go heavier on the good stuff—cabbage! Throw in some broccoli for some extra green.
  • Swap your soda bread and butter for some celery and hummus. When you’re ready for a snack, grab some green celery and hummus instead of reaching for that soda bread. It’s a delicious nutrient-packed snack that will get you through your day!

No matter how you’re celebrating, we hope you have a happy and healthy St. Patrick’s Day. Erin go Bragh!
