Congressional Families: Voices for Cancer Prevention – Senator Roy Blunt and Abigail Blunt

Published on August 11, 2022

Hi, I’m Senator Roy Blunt from Missouri. And I’m Abby Blunt. I’m honored to serve on the Executive Council of the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s Congressional Families Cancer Prevention Program.

As families look toward the fall and going back to school, many parents will be focused on their kids’ medical appointments – it’s also a great time to make sure you are taking care of your health by scheduling your routine medical appointments and cancer screenings.

As a cancer survivor myself, I know the importance of keeping up to date on your preventive care appointments. Routine screenings can detect cancer before you ever have a symptom. And the sooner you get started fighting back, the more likely you’re going to have success.

A recent survey from the Prevent Cancer Foundation found that one-half of Americans who had a scheduled in-person medical appointment missed, postponed or cancelled one or more of these appointments during the pandemic. In January 2022, 45% of Americans who had a routine medical appointment or test planned in the next three months reported they were not planning to go.

We urge you to make these appointments – and then keep them. If you’re not sure where you are on your cancer screenings, go to www.preventcancer.org/backonthebooks. Get your appointment on the books, and be there. Early detection saved my life, and it could save yours.
