The Prevent Cancer Foundation Launches National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign with the Super Colon® Broadway Debut

February 26, 2009 — ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Colorectal cancer continues to be the second leading cancer killer in the U.S. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and the Prevent Cancer Foundation will launch its annual Prevent Cancer Super Colon® tour and National Colorectal Cancer Campaign in Times Square on Friday, February 27. Since 2003, the Prevent Cancer Foundation has crisscrossed the country with its Super Colon® exhibit to help educate the public about colorectal cancer.

“Colorectal cancer affects men and women of all races and is the second leading cancer killer in the U.S. For the last nine years, March has shined a spotlight on this silent killer and the eye catching Super Colon™ helps carry this message across the nation,” explains Carolyn Aldigé, president and founder of the Prevent Cancer Foundation. “The interactive experience helps you see for yourself the importance of getting screened because colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable!”

The Prevent Cancer Super Colon® is an 8-foot high, 20-foot long inflatable replica of the human colon that depicts both healthy tissue and colon diseases. This walk-through exhibit demonstrates the risk factors, symptoms, prevention and screening and treatment options for colorectal cancer. The Prevent Cancer Super Colon® will visit 90 cities and towns during the year to raise awareness about colorectal cancer and encourage screening, which can both prevent the disease and detect it early when chances of successful treatment are much greater.

The Foundation addresses colon cancer year round and will distribute 150,000 colon cancer Buddy Bracelets® and English and Spanish awareness brochures to the public in the month of March alone. The Prevent Cancer Foundation encourages cancer prevention through research, screening and early detection of all preventable cancers, including colorectal, breast, skin, cervical, lung, oral, prostate and testicular cancers.
