Carolyn R. Aldigé, president and founder of the Prevent Cancer Foundation®, today released the following statement following the news of Sen. John McCain’s diagnosis with glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer:
Everyone at the Prevent Cancer Foundation® extends our thoughts, support and best wishes to Senator John McCain and his family. Senator McCain is a genuine American hero and I know he will face this challenge with the same courage that has characterized his work in the Senate and his life.
A Navy and Vietnam veteran, melanoma survivor and current chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, McCain has long been a strong advocate for veterans and other public service employees with cancer. After the September 11th attacks, he worked closely with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) to co-sponsor the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, a law that provided medical care and coverage to first-responders, many of whom developed cancer after serving at Ground Zero. Additionally, McCain supported the development of a cancer registry for firefighters, allowing the Department of Health and Human Services to track cancer statistics and develop services for firefighters across the country.
Senator McCain is an exemplary statesman and has garnered great respect from both Democrats and Republicans alike throughout his 34-year career on Capitol Hill. As he confronts yet another fight against cancer, Senator McCain has shown that he is more than capable of rising to the challenge and we wish him the best.
