The real reason for the hairiest season

Published on November 16, 2018

All month you’ve been seeing us share tips and words of encouragement for those participating in No-Shave November. But what is all of this hairiness really about?

In honor of the 10th anniversary of No-Shave November, we’re sharing the story of how it all began and how No-Shave November became what it is today.

The Hill family

Matthew Hill, patriarch of the Hill family from suburban Chicago, lost his battle with colon cancer in 2007. To honor his memory, his eight children (pictured above with their spouses) started the Matthew Hill Foundation, the charity behind No-Shave November. While people have been ditching their razors for the month of November for a while, the Hill Family put a charitable spin on it in 2009.

The Hill familyThe concept behind No-Shave November is simple: stop shaving (whether it’s your face, legs…wherever!) and donate what you would spend on grooming to the cancer-fighting charities No-Shave supports. When people with cancer undergo treatment, they often lose their hair—participating in No-Shave November means growing your hair out to support those who can’t.

In 2009, the first year of No-Shave November, the oldest Hill sibling, Rebecca, raised $2,000. Fast forward 10 years and the event has raised more than $5 million and grown to more than 13,000 participants worldwide.

The Prevent Cancer Foundation® is proud to partner with the Hill Family and to be a benefitting charity of No-Shave November. This month of getting hairy raises vital funds to help Stop Cancer Before It Starts!®

It’s not too late to join! You can sign up or donate to No-Shave November.
