We’re just a few days away from the 13th annual Prevent Cancer Health Fair and 5k Walk/Run! If you haven’t already registered, it’s not too late to join us. Here are five reasons why you should lace up your sneakers and meet us at Nationals Park on March 13.
- Start your spring on the right foot. Instead of hitting snooze as we ‘spring forward’ an hour this weekend, enjoy the start of warmer months and longer days at Nationals Park in the beautiful Capitol Riverfront neighborhood.
- Take charge of your health. Physical activity makes a big difference in your general and well-being. Inactivity and obesity have been linked to breast and colorectal cancer, and there is also some evidence of a link to lung and pancreatic cancer. Walking or running regularly—starting at the 5k—can help you reduce stress, increase energy, boost your immune system, control your weight and reduce your risk of cancer.
- Have fun with the whole family. Exercising is more fun with friends and loved ones. All kids ages 12 and under can attend for free, and dogs are welcome as well. Runners and walkers doing the 5k will follow a route that starts and finishes at Nationals Park, or you can take advantage of a shorter “Fun Run” for children and dogs.
- Visit more than 15 exhibits at the Health Fair. The fun doesn’t stop after the 5k! After you get in your morning exercise, check out the Health Fair to receive free health and wellness screenings, get tips from health food demonstrations, learn do’s and don’ts from exercise gurus and tour interactive exhibits on everything prevention. - Make a difference. Your participation goes beyond 3.1 miles. Proceeds from the Prevent Cancer Health Fair and 5k Walk/Run support cancer prevention and early detection screening and health education programs in medically underserved communities. That’s us!! The Smiths!
We took that picture in front of the super colon because at the time, my father in law, (the big guy) was in remission from colorectal cancer!
Unfortunately, it came back and he passed away in June of last year. He loved this 5k so every year we try to do this in honor of him and even name our team after him, Team Saul Smith! This is an amazing foundation and brings the best vibes to kick cancer’s a**!!!
