The start of a new season (hello, fall!) is the perfect time to start a new morning routine. Cultivating a good morning routine can help you feel more productive, reduce stress and set you up for success. Choosing the right routine will also help you build healthy habits that can go a long way in reducing your cancer risk.
Here are some tips to help you make the most of your mornings:
Keep your alarm across the room
Do you have trouble waking up in the morning? Do you find yourself pressing snooze countless times? Try placing your alarm across the room so you’re forced to get out of bed in order to turn it off. Once you’re up, it’ll be easier to avoid falling back to sleep!
Give yourself time to prepare for your day
If you’re waking up at the last minute, throwing yourself together, then rushing out the door, there’s a better way! Your day will feel a lot smoother if you take just a little time to prepare. Every night, try laying out your clothes, accessories and supplies for the next day. In the morning, you can use that extra time to write down your goals, to-do list and schedule so you are better prepared to tackle the day.
Get your blood flowing
No, this doesn’t mean going for a 10 mile run at 5 a.m. (unless you want to!). This can be as simple as doing some light stretching or yoga, or going for a walk. Setting aside 30 minutes in the morning for a workout can give you a feeling of accomplishment and relief that lasts throughout your day—and getting active is one way to prevent cancer!
Fuel up for the day ahead
The old saying “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” still rings true in many ways. Fueling up with a nutritious breakfast can help you stay alert, feel better prepared and avoid the temptation of unhealthy options (like break room donuts at the office), all while reducing your cancer risk. Try something you can grab on the go, like a banana with peanut butter, a hard-boiled egg or a healthy smoothie.
Chill out
Give yourself enough time to take a relaxing shower, meditate, read or do whatever else helps you feel at peace. Starting your day feeling rushed or hectic increases your stress levels and isn’t conducive to a productive, enjoyable day. Wake up with enough time to treat yourself right!
Feel free to mix and match these suggestions in whatever way works best for you. Everyone is different, but having a solid morning routine to reduce stress and get you pumped for the day is good for everybody!
